Concrete: Driveways, Walkways & Repairs

Concrete is one of the most durable surfaces around a home—when it is installed correctly. Most failures start below the surface, long before the first crack appears.

Why Concrete Fails

  • An unstable or poorly compacted base
  • Improper grading that traps water
  • Missing or incorrect reinforcement
  • Joints cut too late, too shallow or too far apart
  • Finishing or curing mistakes

New Driveways and Walkways

A proper installation starts with excavation and a solid base, then forms, reinforcement and the right mix. Slope and drainage are planned so water moves away from the house, and control joints are cut at the correct spacing so cracking stays controlled.

Patios and Steps

Patios need the same base and drainage attention as driveways. Steps and stoops must be sized, reinforced and tied into the surrounding work so they stay stable through freeze-thaw cycles.

Repair or Replace?

  • Repair makes sense for cosmetic spalling, minor cracks and localized damage.
  • Replace is the better choice when slabs have settled, heaving is present or the base and drainage are failing.

We inspect the cause before recommending a solution, because repairing the surface without fixing the base usually leads to the same problem again.

Sealing and Maintenance

Sealing can help resist moisture and staining, but it is not a substitute for proper installation. Keep joints and drainage clear, and address cracks early before water gets underneath.

Curing Matters

New concrete needs time to cure. Light foot traffic is usually possible within a day or two, while vehicles should stay off for about a week. Weather, mix and thickness all affect the timeline.
