Painting: Choosing the Right Finish for Every Room

The right paint color gets the attention, but the finish and the preparation decide how long the result lasts. Here is a practical guide to choosing sheen and getting a professional result.

Match the Finish to the Room

  • Flat / matte hides imperfections and works well on ceilings and low-traffic walls.
  • Eggshell offers a soft sheen and is easy to clean, making it a good fit for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Satin is more washable and suits kitchens, hallways and family rooms.
  • Semi-gloss is durable and ideal for trim, doors and cabinets.
  • Gloss is the most durable and reflective, best for accents and detail work.

Preparation Is the Real Job

Peeling, blistering and uneven sheen usually trace back to preparation. Surfaces must be clean, patched, sanded and primed correctly. Glossy surfaces need dulling so the new coat bonds, and stains need a blocking primer.

Interior Painting Checklist

  • Protect floors and furniture
  • Repair cracks, dents and water damage
  • Prime bare wood, patches and stains
  • Cut clean lines by hand
  • Apply two finish coats for even color

Exterior Painting Checklist

  • Address peeling paint and exposed wood
  • Repair rot and failing caulk joints
  • Prime bare and repaired areas
  • Use exterior-grade coatings suited to the climate
  • Detail trim and siding so water sheds properly

Color and Light

Colors shift with natural and artificial light. Test samples on the actual wall and view them at different times of day before committing. Keep undertones consistent from room to room for a cohesive result.

When to Hire a Professional

Large areas, high ceilings, exterior work and surfaces with damage are best handled by a crew that can prep, prime and finish correctly. Proper prep is what separates a paint job that lasts from one that peels in a season.
